Dr. William Thetford is a well-respected board-certified podiatrist specializing in wound care, limb salvage, and surgical treatment of the lower extremity. Originally from West Tennessee, he received his BSN in Nursing from Union University in Jackson, TN, in 2001, and his Master of Science in Nursing Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from Vanderbilt University in 2002. Dr. Thetford worked at Vanderbilt University in the Trauma and Burn unit and Neurosurgery before advancing his education with a Master of Science in Biomedical Science from Barry University in 2005.
He graduated first in his class from Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine in 2009. Dr. Thetford completed his residency at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State Department of Orthopedic Surgery/Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, where he gained valuable experience in foot and ankle surgery, including limb salvage, wound care, reconstructive surgery, trauma, and elective surgery. His experiences at Vanderbilt and DMC have equipped him to treat the lower extremity while understanding the multiple comorbidities involved with treating complex, high-risk patients.
Dr. Thetford is particularly interested in wound care and diabetic limb salvage and is trained in the Lapiplasty procedure for bunion correction. After his residency, he was part of a Limb Preservation team in North Carolina, working closely with Vascular Surgery, Medicine, Infectious Disease, and Plastic Surgery. He later moved back to Florida, spending six years in the Florida Keys, where he was Chief of Surgery at Fishermen’s Community Hospital and co-chair of the Mariners Physician Hospital Organization board.
Although he enjoys surgery, Dr. Thetford prefers to exhaust all conservative measures before surgical intervention to achieve the best possible outcome for the patient. He values spending time with his patients and getting to know them to ensure a positive experience. He also collaborates closely with other medical specialists to treat the whole patient rather than just the foot and ankle.

What do patients say about Dr. Thetford?
I had what could have been a serious foot problem and it was treated exceptionally well by Dr. Thetford over a period of months. While surgery was eventually needed it was not performed until all other options were tried. Also, I was always treated with respect not only by Dr. Thetford but his staff as well.
Although my appointment with Dr Thetford was my first, I was not disappointed. He was knowledgeable, friendly and polite. Looking forward to my next appointment. BTW, not happy with the pad to check in…can be very confusing for someone in their 80’s.
The staff and Dr. Thetford are competent and friendly. He took the time to explain my test results in a clear fashion. Very short wait time. All in all, a good experience.
Dr Thetford was understanding and compassionate. Fracturing my ankle forced me to completely change my life plans and I was emotionally devastated by my diagnosis and plan of care. Being unable to work and dependent on others for assistance in activities of daily living was a difficult adjustment. It’s now 10 weeks since my accident and I am starting physical therapy and looking forward to returning to work soon. Dr Thetford explained the whole process in detail from the beginning and he has been accurate in realistically describing the steps involved in recovery. I appreciate that he was always honest even though he knew it wasn’t always what I wanted to hear. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who needed surgery due to a foot or ankle injury.
Dr. Thetford has been extremely thorough in guiding me through the healing of my foot. At each visit, he made sure I understood what we were looking at on both t he X-rays and the ultrasound. I couldn't recommend him more!
Dr Thetford and all staff were great. They treated me for a stress fracture and were so pleasant and efficient every time I went in. Highly recommend.
Very pleased with his treatment of a toe issue. Would highly recommend him.
The staff was so friendly from the front door all the way into the appointment. Dr. Furmanek was immediately able to pinpoint my issues and provide solutions right away. I definitely recommend making your appointment today.
Very glad the hospital contacted Dr. Furmanek on my behalf when I was admitted with a diabetic abscess on my foot. He was very approachable and competent with my care. He was one of a few health professionals I had contact with at NCH north that I have any respect for. His office has been very responsive and professional as well. I do recommend Dr. Furmanek.
The staff and Dr. Furmanek were all friendly, cheerful and very helpful. I especially loved how Dr. Furmamek took his time to explain my treatment options and what I could expect. The doctor really put me at ease. He also had excellent eye contact when speaking to me. I felt he was thorough and was a good listener.
